Saturn made the top-ten list of car companies that should be resurrected! And a lot of people agreed, mostly people who own high mileage, trouble-free S-Line cars. Mind you, the later stuff they sold wasn't too bad either.
Someone should buy Saturn, Pontiac, Saab, and Oldsmobile and create Ex-GM motors.

Have you ever tried purposely denting one of the panels? It was so cool that these were made of plastic.

I have not. I actually don't think it had any dents to be honest, just a nice scratch along the passenger side.

When my mom and dad bought an SC2, my dad actually took a hammer to the passenger door to see if it would dent. He said it wouldn't no matter how hard he hit it.

And then he said "This car is perfect for you honey!"

She did back it into a pole without damage one time apparently.

I liked my Astra... well, except for the automatic transmission. I couldn't find the patience to find one with a stick. (Why do I keep buying cars with automatic transmissions only to bitch about it? I guess I'm a real glutton for punishment.)
Oh, and it does knee, FYI. It knees real bad. Ask me how I know.

I really like the Astra, I want to find a 3-door with a stick, of course.

That's the winning combination.
The Astra's four-speed auto wasn't just a boring transmission, it's also one of the worst I've ever come across. Mainly because it's inefficient. I took a 500 mile round trip in my Astra a few months after I first brought it home and it only averaged 28 mpg according to the onboard trip computer. An average of 28 mpg from a compact hatchback with a miser 1.8 liter engine is just unreasonable.
My Charger, which is a bigger, heavier car with a 292 horse engine, averages that on long trips, believe it or not. And it's five-speed auto doesn't earn any praise, either. It's almost just as incompetent.
That was probably the Saturn Astra's biggest flaw... well that, and the stupid sticker price.

4 speeds just isn't enough for a 4 cylinder. It works for lazy V8s, but a little buzzy 4 needs more than that.

Agreed. The base model Chevrolet Sonic actually uses the Astra's same 1.8 liter four-banger but mates it up to a six-speed automatic instead of a four-speed. No surprise, it returns better fuel economy.

That makes it sound like a swap would technically be possible..

It was a Saturn first!
At least in the US...
Hell, it's sold in the Middle East as a GMC

Possibly. But how easy it would be, well, that's another story. The Astra uses screwy European electrics; that's what would be your biggest hurdle, I think.
